Following hot on the heels of 2008’s Life Is Legal EP, Paper Bag Records will release the highly anticipated debut album from Josh Reichmann Oracle Band on March 10th in Canada. The band will celebrate the release of Crazy Power with a date at Canadian Music Fest’s Eye Weekly showcase at Gladstone Hotel in Toronto on March 13th. The album was self-produced and recorded with Ian McGettigan at Giant Studios in Toronto.

Josh Reichmann Oracle Band is a five piece band incorporating heavy saxophone, Stevie Wonder-meets-The Stooges keyboards, soul-style drumming, a live dancer, thick roots bass. The sound is heart wrenching and darkly enchanting. The album is a sprawling, ambitious and cohesive record tied together by sonic themes with distorted hooks and a nod to early funk/soul production and feel.

Like a band from another world aping the sounds of the 20th century with manic intensity and passion. Josh is joined in the studio by Ian Maggetigan on bass, James Sayce (of Tangiers) on bass, Sebastien Grainger on drums, Steve Singh on keyboards, and Joseph Shabason on sax.

Live the band can be an entirely different animal. Fleshed out by a six peace band - Josh Reichmann Oracle Band is comprised of Steve Singh on keys, Jon Hynes on bass, Joseph Shabason on sax, Vince Spilchuc on trumpet, Kieran Adams on drums, Josh Reichmann on guitar, and Laura Bolton often accompanies with dance. It is a warped soul revival rock show with dark echoes and haunting energy.

Matthew Barber capped off a successful year with the announcement that his most recent album, Ghost Notes, has been nominated for a Juno Award in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Solo category. 2008 saw the Outside Music artist complete two cross-Canada tours. Barber also just returned from The Sibling Rivalry Australian tour with his sister and label-mate, Jill Barber; will be performing at SXSW next month in Texas, and will see Ghost Notes released in the United States on April 14th through Outside Music and Redeye Distribution.

Ghost Notes was self-produced and stands as Matthew’s most mature collection of songs to date. Recorded over six gray November days at the rustic and secluded Bathouse Studio near Kingston, Ontario, the songs on Ghost Notes were cut mainly live-off-the-floor and entirely to analog tape. The result is a sound that tips its hat to many of the records of the 1970’s that Barber adores. While no attempt was made to sound specifically “retro”, it was a conscious decision on the part of Barber and veteran engineer Ken Friesen to avoid computers and the modern “pro-tools sound” as much as possible. In keeping with this approach, the arrangements are deliberately sparse and purely supportive of Barber’s vocals which, prominently mixed, carry the tunes and tell the stories. What emerges is a rich, natural-sounding record with classic touches that serve to embellish an honest core of songs that transcend eras.

“I'm thrilled to be nominated - I didn't see it coming,” says Barber. “It's an honour to be recognized alongside people like Old Man Luedecke and Fred Eaglesmith. Hopefully it will open a few more doors for me as a musician.” The 2009 Juno Awards will be broadcast on CTV on Sunday, March 29 from General Motors Place in Vancouver, BC.

Two Fingers | Paper Bag Records

Two Fingers is the new project from legendary producer Amon Tobin and Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. Their self-titled debut album will be released in Canada on April 14th and will be preceded by two singles. “What You Know” will be available on January 13th and will be followed by the release of “That Girl” on March 17th. Both singles and seven album tracks feature the vocals of acclaimed North London-based MC and MOBO winner Sway.

Amon Tobin and Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman met when Tobin lived in Brighton and bonded over an interest in music that ran way beyond the boundaries of “electronica”. Last year, while Tobin was living in Montreal, they began bouncing beats back and forth, trying to apply production techniques associated with UK styles like drum & bass to the template of hip hop. When they had a few tunes together they sent them to Sway. He was so taken with what they were doing; he flew straight out to Montreal and recorded seven tracks with them. The remaining rhythms were voiced by sometime Missy Elliot protégé Ms Jade and dancehall legend Cecile.

The result is a project unlike anything that any of the three main players has ever made before, a unique, utterly uncompromising, brutal and beautiful record that could only have grown out of the UK and the internationalism of those involved. Like all the best music it transcends genre to stand on its own. Two Fingers is set to be one of the records of the year.

On October 21st the Outside Music label will release Sebastien Grainger’s long-awaited debut album Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains. Grainger is best known as the singer and drummer for Canadian dance-punk duo Death From Above 1979, who took the world by storm with the release of their breakthrough record You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine in 2004.

Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains was written, recorded and mixed by Sebastien Grainger at Giant Studio in Toronto with James Shaw (Metric) lending engineering assistance on a number of tracks. A host of other artists contribute to the album including: Leon Taheny (Germans), Nick Sewell (Illuminati) and Andrew Scott (Bicycles & The Meligrove Band)

Fans of his prior music will likely be surprised by his new direction and its delicately layered ruminations rich with energetic arrangements and deep melodic undercurrents. With his first full-length album he further expands upon the well-received American Names EP which was released earlier this year.

The album reflects the majesty its title suggests with big chords, and soaring choruses. Sebastien’s voice paints the portrait of a man still climbing. Pulling no punches, Grainger has crafted a muscular and smart rock record that will surprise people expecting him to relive his past.

Feeling like he is finally expressing himself on his own terms with the new record, Grainger is eager to hit the road once again and present these songs to the folks who’ve been curious about his next move. The COAST 'Expatriate'

On April 1, 2008, The Coast will finally release their long-awaited debut album Expatriate in Canada on Aporia Records. The band has been touted as one of the acts to watch in 2008 by Canada’s national music monthly Exclaim! and Toronto’s Eye Weekly, thanks to the buzz that has continued to grow as the band toured extensively across North America last year.

Expatriate was recorded in winter 2007 in Toronto with producer Chris Stringer (We’re Marching On, Ohbijou). The album is a departure from the layered epics of their first EP, harnessing the off-the-floor energy of their live show and letting their signature hooky guitar melodies stand on their own.

Matthew Barber's Ghost Notes and Tour

Ghost Notes is the title of a brand new full-length record by Toronto singer-songwriter Matthew Barber. Produced by Barber himself, it stands as his most mature collection of songs to date. The Diableros "Aren't Ready For The Country" - Release Day

The Diableros Aren't Ready For The Country is a play on Neil Young's song "Are You Ready For The Country" as well as an in-joke about the band's inability to perform a galloping musical outro that was subsequently removed from the end of the song "Nothing Down In Hogtown".

The Diableros’ debut album You Can't Break the Strings In Our Olympic Hearts was made for less than what you'd pay for a month of rent in their home base of Toronto. The album propelled them to the forefront of the Canadian music scene -- they landed on the cover of Now Magazine, played the main stage at the inaugural V Fest, toured Canada twice and shared the stage with the likes of Art Brut, We Are Scientists, Camera Obscura , Cold War Kids and The Stills. Word spread across the border and the album garnered rave reviews in Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Under The Radar, Pop Matters and the band played 2 sold out shows in New York City.

The Diableros Aren't Ready For The Country; recorded by Paul Aucoin at Halla Music in Toronto over the Spring and Summer of 2007, is a natural progression for a band, a document of a band that have soaked in their collective experiences and matured as both individuals and as a band. Aren't Ready For The Country isn't a departure from the sound that endeared The Diableros to many on their debut, but a growth.

The songs on Aren't Ready For The Country run the gauntlet from anthemic rockers like "Kicking Rocks" to melancholic in the slow burn of “Mist”. The epic “Turning Backwards”, clocking in at over seven minutes could, in itself, be the soundtrack to a David Lynch short film with its intensity quelled only by an eerie whisper which leads to a riveting climax.

The Diableros are known for creating an intense sound, brooding instrumentation rounded out by Carmichael's valiant and honest vocal delivery. The live show mirrors the intensity of their recorded output evident through the blood that often ends up on Jackson's guitar after many of their gigs.

There are only so many words that can entice one to listen to an album. The above prose offers a brief glimpse into a band that prefers that you just listen to their records and come see them play rather than read about their exploits. The Diableros live and breathe music; they are a group of friends, who despite the weight of some of their songs don't take themselves too seriously.

Rebekah Higgs - Release Day

It’s hard to imagine Rebekah Higgs being anything other than successful. The Halifax, Nova Scotia based artist’s popularity has been escalating rapidly. The self-confessed ‘uncontrollable artist’ has already toured Canada from coast to coast while working her hometown into a frenzy.

Her self-titled Outside Music debut showcases an innate ability to write and perform genres spanning traditional folk to chic electronica. One of the highlights of her unique sound is her mysteriously raspy yet soulful voice – which is finally paying her artistic dividends:

“My raspy voice was something that really held me back from getting the leads in school musicals, and not getting into children honour choir and other things,” says Higgs. “It wasn't until I was an adult that I accepted the way my voice is, that having a unique voice is far more intriguing than being that perfect soprano.”

After finishing her English and Theatre studies at Acadia University, Rebekah started playing piano, the guitar and selling her own paintings. At the same time she began writing songs.

Her new album, Rebekah Higgs, was recorded over an intense three week span in Toronto under the guidance of Thomas Rider Payne (Joydrop). The recording process saw Rebekah contribute guitar, piano, bass, banjo and some percussion. She even converted her voice into an instrument on “Wedding One”.

“I kept hearing a violin part in my head, but I had left my violin in Halifax,” she comments. “So instead I sang the part and we used that underneath the chorus.”

The overall theme of the album revolves around relationships and the manipulation of them. It’s about the struggle to understand each other through the pain and heartbreak, whether it be with friends, families, loves, or our leaders.

Rebekah Higgs begins with stand-out and live favourite “Parables”. Inspired by government and their ability to shape the media, the song was written and recorded simultaneously.

“I really enjoy writing in the studio, I enjoy catching the spontaneity of a moment on tape. “My Feet” and “Apples” were also written in this fashion. When I play live I try to recapture those moments or create new moments on stage with my band and with the audience.”

Other highlights include the up-beat and contemplative “Mr. Weatherman” which finds romance in daily forecasts. “Winding Watch” inspired by a gift from a close friend, is complete with a dreamy, loopy, synth and vocal effects. Rebekah Higgs makes music that is open to interpretation and allows the listener to apply the lyrics to their own experiences.

She will be touring Canada in support of her album throughout 2007 and 2008.

A whole load of tour dates have been added to the Tour Dates section. The Sadies, Born Ruffians, Sunparlour Players, Rock Plaza Central, Maximo Park, Oh Susanna, Young Rival, Tinariwen and The Diableros will all be touring Canada before the end of the year.

Like many people in the industry, Darryl Weeks’ first music-related job was at a record store. Eventually he landed the Marketing Supervisor role at the HMV Superstore in Toronto where he ran in-store performances and autograph sessions.

Weeks then moved on to one of Canada’s leading distributors, Outside Music. There he was employed as an in-house publicist for a number of Outside’s distributed labels including Warp Records and Domino Recording Co. In that time he worked with international acts like Arctic Monkeys, Maximo Park and Jamie Lidell. After spending five years at Outside Music he founded StageFright Publicity, which is in its fourth year of offering full-service music media relations services.

StageFright Publicity’s current roster includes Paper Bag Records (You Say Party, Woodhands, PS I Love You, Winter Gloves, Slim Twig, The Acorn, Born Ruffians, The Rural Alberta Advantage) and Outside Music (The Sadies, Matthew Barber).
